Hi there! It’s me Sergio, The Accent Explorer. Explorer Log: AUSTRALIA, Week Two. I’m reporting from beautiful, bustling Brisbane, or as locals call it, “Brizzie!” (beat) Can you say it with me? Briz-zee! (pause) That’s fun to say, right? Brizzie is the capital city of the warm and tropical state of Queensland, up in the top right hand corner of Australia. And guess what? Brisbane is the gateway to one of the most colorful places on earth…the Great Barrier Reef! Ever heard of it, Explorer? It’s like a giant underwater city buzzing with life….full of rainbow coral and fish in every color you might dream of, and water that sparkles like a blue-green gem in the sunlight.

Meanwhile, back above the waves, Brisbane is buzzing with its own kind of magic! And just like last week, I want to share all of my favourite discoveries about this sensational city. First off, the people in Brisbane LOVE to move! They stroll through sunny city streets, splash in nearby ocean waves, or sometimes do both in the very same afternoon! That’s right! Believe it or not, Brisbane is home to something called the Streets Beach, which is Australia’s only man-made beach, right in the middle of the city. It’s the perfect place for families to splash about and laugh and play on hot summer days (and in Brisbane, there are a lot of them!). And speaking of being active, I also visited the sports stadium where the Brisbane Lions play Aussie Rules Football. We’ve mentioned it before. Remember what it’s called? It’s…the Gabba! It’s where thousands of fans shout and clap for football and cricket matches. And guess what, the Gabba will also be featured in the upcoming 2032 Olympics! How cool is that?

The only thing that Brisbanites seem to like more than their sports are their kangaroos. While I didn’t see any kangaroos hopping around in the wild here, I did spot lots of kangaroo statues scattered all over the city. Some were big, some small, some made out of old scraps of metal, and others made from shiny bronze. Each statue was like a love letter to Australia's most famous hopping friend and national animal.

Oh, and I’ve GOT to tell you about all the food that I ate this week. Lucky for me, Explorer, Brisbane is home to people from over 200 cultures, so the food here comes from all over the world. Every time I heard a sausage sizzle, or a Morton Bay Bug bubbling in the pot (that’s a special kind  of local lobster), my mouth started watering! All the ingredients here are super fresh, but it’s the way the food is cooked that makes it so unique. Chefs from all over the globe bring their own ideas and mix them with local flavors, creating something totally new! As Brisbanites like to say, everything in Brisbane is proudly local, but inspired by the world.

My final highlight happened yesterday morning, when I got to visit something called a Suitcase Rummage. That’s a mini-market where people from all over the city bring suitcases filled with clothes and handmade accessories to sell. No big booths… just suitcases on the ground and lots of friendly faces! And because people from Brisbane care a lot about taking care of the planet, many of these pieces are made from recycled fabrics. Pretty awesome, right?. Every CLICK of a new suitcase marked the beginning of a fashion journey.

Safe to say, my own suitcase is way heavier now after all the new t-shirts and shorts that I picked up! I can barely zip it shut. Ooh, that reminds me of a little trick my Aunt Izzy taught me when I was younger. You JUMP up into the air, PLOP right on the top of your clothes, and ZIP! There we go! All packed for our next stop…Perth! I hope I can sneak a selfie with a cute little quokka while I’m there. Wish me luck! Then, after Perth, I’ll fly to my final destination (Sydney), where my friend Matilda the Kangaroo will be waiting! And remember the best part, Explorer: that adventure is becoming a brand-new Accent Explorer book! You’ll get to read it, see it, and hear it come alive with sounds from the story. The countdown is on… Until then, keep exploring!
