Hi There! It’s me Sergio, The Accent Explorer. Explorer Log: AUSTRALIA, Week One. I’m coming to you all the way from sunny Melbourne, or as locals say, “Mel-bun!” Not “Mel-born.” “Mel-bun!” That’s right, I’m officially in the Land Down Under. Oh, and if you’re listening Mimsy, the flight was so much fun! I watched the clouds drift past like floating islands, and when lunch came… guess what they served? Sausage rolls!
It’s been about a week since I arrived, and already I’ve seen so many incredible things and met some amazing people. So before I move on to my next destination, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite moments with you.
Let’s set the scene. Picture Australia on a map: big, bold, and golden. Now trace your finger down to the very bottom right edge, where the land meets the shimmering blue ocean. That’s Melbourne, the beating heart of Victoria and one of the liveliest cities in the world!
Alright, ready for my highlights? There’s a lot to love! First of all, the music! It’s everywhere! And it’s such a big part of their culture. Melbourne is called the “live music capital of the world”. Do you know why, Explorer? Because there are more live music venues per person here than anywhere else in the world! My friend Ava would love it! The sounds of street guitarists, drummers, violinists, and even saxophonists echo through the city streets. I haven’t heard a didgeridoo yet, but I’m keeping my ears open!
Speaking of things my friends would love, my friend Fauna would be pleased to know that I had a couple of incredible experiences with the Australian wildlife. Earlier this week, I went to a golf course to see if I could spy some of those spectacular marsupials that we know as kangaroos. And, sure enough, I saw a whole mob of them lazing about on the green enjoying the sun. I walked over to say hello, but they must have had other plans, because they all hopped off in the opposite direction!
A few days later, I visited a tiny place called Phillip Island, which is only a couple hours drive from Melbourne. And guess what I saw, Explorer - penguins! And lots of them! When I first got there, the beach was calm, just the sound of the waves rolling in. But then, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, little heads started popping out of the water one by one. And before long… It looked like an army of penguins! Hundreds of them waddling out of the ocean together, marching across the sand like tiny explorers on a mission. They made their way up the beach and then up the steep, sandy hills toward their cozy burrows: flippers flapping, little feet going pat-pat-pat. It was like watching the world’s cutest parade!
My final highlight from my week in Melbourne was when I walked past a group of people playing some sort of stick and ball game at the park. They invited me to join. And the game they were playing…was cricket! Now, it took me a few minutes to learn the rules, but after a few swings and laughs, I got the hang of it. And guess what…I love it! Now I can’t wait to see a real match!
I’m packing up my bags once again …next stop: Brisbane! From there, I’ll head to Perth, before finally hopping over to Sydney to visit my friend, Matilda the Kangaroo! And guess what? The adventure doesn’t end here… it’s about to leap off the page! A brand new Accent Explorer book is coming: featuring my big day in Sydney with Matilda as we explore Aussie culture in fun, new ways. You’ll be able to read it, see it, and even hear it come to life with sounds from the story. Keep your eyes and ears peeled, Explorer. It’s going to be amazing. Until then, Keep Exploring!
