SERGIO: Hi There. I’m Sergio, the Accent Explorer. And today is a very special day. Because it’s TRAVEL DAY! That’s right, my trip to Australia is finally here And I couldn’t be more excited. In fact, I’m packing my suitcase as we speak! Short sleeved shirt here, shorts there, and even a pair of flip flops. It might be cold right now in Green Ridge, but remember in Australia, it’s almost summer. So I have to make sure I’m packing accordingly.
There’s so much to remember before a big trip. I hope I don’t forget to bring everything I need. Explorer, if you’re like me, sometimes you get a little worried you might forget to pack your favorite things on a big trip. And that’s ok!
Anyway last week, a little birdy told me that all of my friends in Green Ridge had something very special planned for me. That little birdy…was, of course, my best pal Mimsy the Mockingbird. And she’s here with me right now. Mimsy, I can’t wait to hear what all my friends have in store for me, but first, I just wanted to say that I’m going to miss you buddy.
MIMSY: I’m going to miss you too Sergio. A lot.
SERGIO: Oh Mims! We make such a great team. You’ll be right here cheering me on…
[KNOCK KNOCK * Note: Each knock will be unique. Let the guest choose their knock.]
SERGIO: Oh, who could that be?
MIMSY: [Playful sarcasm] Hmmmm, I wonder.
[DOOR OPENS]
SERGIO: Aunt Izzy! What are you doing here?
AUNT IZZY: MImsy wanted to organize a goodbye parade for you, so all of your favourite people in the world had a chance to wish you a safe trip before you left.
SERGIO: I love it!
AUNT IZZY: You’re going to have such a great time, Sergio. There’s only so much you can learn about a country just from reading about it. And while hearing people talk about other countries and cultures is really valuable, the best way to learn is just to get out there and experience it in person! Oh, just remember to pack your passport! It’s the most important travel item. No passport means no plane.. Then your trip is over before it even begins!
SERGIO: Oh yes. A passport! My special little book that introduces me to every country that I visit: it tells people who I am and where I’m from. I’ll pack that right now. Thanks Aunt Izzy.
[KNOCK KNOCK]
MIMSY: Another friend is here!
[DOOR OPENS]
SERGIO: It’s Ava! My Best Door Neighbor!
AVA: Hi Sergio! I just wanted to come and wish you a safe trip to Australia. I’m very excited for you. You’ll have to tell me how good a didgeridoo sounds in real life.
SERGIO: Thanks, Ava. Anything I learn about Australian music while I’m over there, you’ll be the very first person I share it with.
AVA: Oh, and don’t forget to bring your travel visa. You’re going to need that to get into the country! It goes right next to your passport, like two notes that go together in a song.
SERGIO: Oh, my travel visa! I wouldn’t want to forget that! Explorer, a travel visa is a special document that tells the people in the country you’re travelling to that you’re allowed to enter and stay there for the length of your trip. I’ll pack that right now. Thanks Ava!
[KNOCK KNOCK]
MIMSY: [YELLING] More people!
[DOOR OPENS]
MRS MCLAUGHLIN: Hello Sergio!
SERGIO: Mrs McLaughlin! My favorite librarian!
MRS MCLAUGHLIN: I can’t believe the day is finally here. Australia is full of amazing stories and clever authors. If you spot any of their awesome libraries, make sure you step inside and explore. You might discover books you have never seen before, with new adventures only found in Australia. And speaking of books, do not worry about those you borrowed for the plane. I will make sure you do not get any late fees while you are away.
SERGIO: Thanks, Mrs McLaughlin!
MRS MCLAUGHLIN: Oh, speaking of which, don’t forget to pack your travel bank card. You will need it to buy tasty treats and special souvenirs on your adventure. You would not want to be stuck in another country without a way to pay. Not everyone is as forgiving as your friendly, local librarian!
SERGIO: Oh yes, Thanks for the reminder.. I’ll pack that right now!
[KNOCK KNOCK]
MIMSY: [SINGING] Whooooo is it?
[DOOR OPENS]
FAUNA: Sergio!
SERGIO: Fauna! The World’s Best Wombat Whisperer.
FAUNA: I’m so excited for you to come face to fur with all of my favorite Aussie animals like the platypus, the wombat, the emu, the quokka, and of course, the Kangaroo! Seeing these beautiful creatures in the wild is a true gift that I’m sure you’ll cherish.
Just remember to treat these animals with respect. No touching. Just observe and maybe snap a sneaky selfie too. Animals need personal space just like we do.
SERGIO: You got it, Fauna. And I feel extra prepared for meeting these majestic creatures thanks to you!
FAUNA: And don’t forget to pack a travel cell phone! Phones from home do not always work in other countries. And i f you’re going to keep us all updated on your travels, and send us all those cute quokka photos, you’ll need that travel cell phone.
SERGIO: Of course! How could I forget my travel cell phone! I’ll pack that right now in the front pocket of my bag. [SFX: ZZZZIPPP]
[KNOCK KNOCK]
MIMSY: This party is getting rowdy!
[DOOR OPENS]
JACK: G’Day Sergio.
SERGIO: Jack! My awesome Aussie friend.
JACK: Boy am I jealous that you’re getting ready to take a trip down under. There’s going to be some great cricket matches played while you’re down there too. You should definitely check one out. There’s no better way to get a piece of Australian culture than to cheer for one of our sports teams against the English! You know what we say, Sergio…
SERGIO: Aussie, Aussie, Aussie…(pause)
MIMSY: Oi, oi, oi! (pause)
JACK: Oh, and Sergio, let me give you one piece of travel advice. Make sure you pack a photograph of all your friends to help you when you’re missing home. It always helps me when I’m missing my family and friends.
SERGIO: Great idea Jack. Homesickness is real. A friend (or family) photo can make your heart feel full again. But, I don’t know if I have a photo of my friends.
AUNT IZZY: That’s why we’re here, Sergio. Gather round everyone. Let's take a photo. Okay, are we ready? Australia on three. 1…2…3…
EVERYONE: AUSTRALIA!
[CAMERA CLICK]
AUNT IZZY: Picture perfect!
SERGIO: Wow. Thanks for the words of wisdom everyone. And Mimsy, I can’t believe you planned this whole thing just for me. You really are the best.
MIMSY: That’s not all, Sergio. Check your phone messages. There are some other people who want to say goodbye to you!
[BEEP]
MS NKIRU: Ndewo Sergio. This is Ms Nkiru. I just wanted to wish you a safe trip to Australia. There are some delicious Nigerian restaurants in Sydney that you’ll have to try. Maybe they’ll even have Yam and Eggs! Safe travels!
[BEEP]
MS SIMONE: Hallo Sergio. Ms Simone here. I hope you have the best time in Australia. You know, there are quite a few Australian towns that were settled by Germans, especially in South Australia. If you visit one, make sure you say a big hello to the locals for me. You never know, one of them could be my cousin!
[BEEP]
MS SALLIE: Hey there Sergio. Ms Sallie here. I was just calling to say that hope you enjoy the big cities, and the crowds of people. There’ll be plenty of activities to keep you busy all day, I’m sure. Well listen, I’ll make sure to have a batch of sausage rolls ready for you when you return home, okay! You have fun and I’ll see you soon. Bye-bye.
[BEEP]
MS RITA: Hola Sergio. Ms Rita here. I know you loved my Alfajores Peruanos, but I hear Australia has some delicious desserts of their own, including something called Pavlova. I don’t know what it is, or what it tastes like but let me know if you find out. Adios!
SERGIO: Oh, boy. This was great Mimsy. I’ve loved hearing from all of my friends! But hey, look at the time. We need to head on over to the airport. I wouldn’t want to miss my flight. Thanks for coming, everyone. I’ll see you all when I get back!
EVERYONE: BYE SERGIO!
[TRANSITION STING]
SERGIO: Okay. Here we are at the airport, Mimsy. And look who's here - our friend Luca the Pilot!
LUCA: Hi Sergio. Are you ready for your flight?
SERGIO: Let’s see. I’ve dropped off my luggage, I’ve printed my boarding passes, and my passport is right here ready to go. What’s next?
LUCA: Next, it’s time to go through security. But don’t worry. It’s nothing to be scared of. You’ll just be saying hello to some friendly folk who want to keep us safe at the airport and in the air!
SERGIO: That sounds great!
LUCA: While you do all that, I have to go and prepare the plane for takeoff. See you in there, Sergio.
SERGIO: Thanks, Captain Luca. Okay, Explorer. It’s almost time to go through. But there’s oooone more thing I need to do first. Say goodbye to Mimsy.
MIMSY: Bye Sergio! I’ll miss you! Send me a sound recording when you land.
SERGIO: I’ll miss you too, Mimsy. Courage grows every time we try something new. We can be brave together. But hey, I'll be back before you know it. And guess what, I’ll make sure to document everything I do on this trip, so you can see that flying isn’t scary. It’s actually a whole lot of fun.
MIMSY: Say hi to Matilda for me.
SERGIO: I will. Bye buddy!
[TRANSITION STING]
SERGIO: Okay, Explorer. I’m through security and I’m now waiting at my gate. They should be announcing my flight very shortly. I think I even see the plane waiting for us out the big window in front of me.
[DING]
PA SYSTEM: Attention passengers. Flight AE1127 to Melbourne is ready for boarding.
SERGIO: Well, here we go, Explorer. Next stop, Australia! I wonder who we will meet first? Oh, look there’s a flight attendant, ushering everyone through the passenger door. I’m so excited!
FLIGHT ATTENDANT: G’Day, Sergio. Welcome aboard!
SERGIO: Thank you! Oh, and G’Day! (Beat) Wow. Did you hear that, Explorer? I think our Australian adventure has officially begun!
